Handel’s Dixit Dominus completes a Baroque afternoon at St Paul’s Church on Saturday 14 November
Cambridge Philharmonic is delighted to welcome back violinist Jorge Jimenez, our new principal guest leader, for an afternoon of Baroque music at St Paul’s Church, Hills Road.
Jorge is one of the most sought-after violinists of our day, known for a painstaking and exciting approach to performing music in the style, and on the instruments, for which it was composed. In the first half of the concert he joins soloists from the orchestra for two of Bach’s most-loved Brandenburg Concertos, Nos 3 and 4.
A Baroque specialist with a remarkable career
Jorge is the founder and director of the Spanish ensemble Tercia Realidad and concertmaster of ensembles including La Arpeggiata, The Hanover Band, Forma Antiqva, La Risonanza, Capella Cracoviensis, I Fagiolini and Laudonia Ensemble. He has also appeared as musical director and soloist at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, and has recorded for labels including Atlantic Records, Naxos and Hyperion.
For this concert he plays a Ruggieri violin made in 1680, on loan from the JumpstartJr Foundation in the Netherlands.
Handel’s Dixit Dominus
After Jeorge’s performance, the Cambridge Philharmonic Chorus and Chamber Orchestra turn to one of Handel’s choral-orchestral masterworks. Dixit Dominus combines florid vocal writing and Baroque orchestral fireworks with moments of extraordinary serenity.
The chorus is joined by up-and-coming soloists from the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music: sopranos Jasmine Flicker and Isabella Hulbert, countertenor Alexander Thow, tenor Max Robbins and bass Tom Butler, conducted by Harry Sever.
